Sediment filtration is the least glamorous thing we install and quite possibly the most important. It is pure mechanical filtration — and it is what keeps your softener, your UV lamp and your RO membrane from being destroyed by grit.
Sediment filtration for Union, NJ and Union Township
Sediment filtration is the least glamorous thing we install and quite possibly the most important, because everything downstream depends on it. On this page we cover reusable spin-down screens that catch sand and grit, Big Blue cartridge housings for finer silt and rust, multi-stage setups that step the micron rating down gradually, and the pressure-gauge pairs that tell you when a cartridge is actually loading up rather than guessing. Sediment filters are rated by micron size, and the mistake we see most often is someone fitting a single fine cartridge that blinds in a fortnight instead of staging it properly. On a well or in an older Union home with corroding supply lines, this is not optional equipment — it is what protects your softener, your UV lamp and your RO membrane. We answer 24 hours a day and the on-site test is free.
Specifically, we install and service spin-down prefilters, Big Blue 10-inch and 20-inch cartridge housings, staged multi-cartridge systems, pressure gauge pairs, and scheduled cartridge replacement. We work in Union Township only. Worth stating plainly: a sediment filter is purely mechanical. It will not improve taste, remove chlorine, soften water or kill bacteria, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. If your water is cloudy we can help; if it tastes of chlorine you want carbon. Call (973) 380-3906.
Every option below is sized from a free on-site test and quoted in writing. Pick what matches your water, or call and tell us what you are seeing.

See Cartridge Replacement ServiceSudden pressure loss or brown water after a main break? We answer nights, weekends and holidays countywide.
See 24/7 Emergency Sediment ServiceAfter a water main break or a hydrant flush, a sediment cartridge can load up and choke your flow within hours — and if the house has no prefilter at all, that grit goes straight into your softener valve and your RO membrane. Both are worth an immediate call, and we answer live 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, holidays included. A cartridge that has slowly crept up on its change interval is not an emergency, and we will book that on a normal visit.
A sediment filter physically strains particles out of your water. Filters are rated in microns, and a smaller number means finer filtration. The proven setup is a two-stage approach: a reusable spin-down screen around 50 to 100 microns catches sand and the coarse material, and a cartridge filter at 5 to 20 microns catches the finer silt and rust behind it.
This matters in Union because of the housing stock. A great many homes here were built in the mid-century era or earlier, and decades-old galvanized and copper supply lines shed rust and scale internally. Homeowners describe it as water that runs rusty after the street is worked on, grit in the aerators, or a tub that fills cloudy. That is sediment, and it is a mechanical problem with a mechanical fix.
Being clear about the limits matters more than the marketing. Here is an honest split, so you know whether this is the system your house needs or whether you need something alongside it.
A clear housing with a stainless screen. You flush it by opening a valve instead of buying a replacement cartridge, which makes it the cheapest possible long-term first line of defense.
Pentair Pentek “Big Blue” 10-inch and 20-inch housings are the workhorses of whole-house filtration. Their real advantage is availability — replacement cartridges are stocked absolutely everywhere, so you are never stranded waiting on a proprietary part.
A gauge before and after the filter is one of the cheapest upgrades in all of water treatment. The gap between the two readings tells you exactly when the cartridge is loading up, so you stop guessing and stop changing filters that still have life in them.
Sediment filtration goes on the main line ahead of absolutely everything else — right after the pressure tank on a well, or right after the water meter on city water. Placing it anywhere else in the chain defeats the purpose, because the equipment downstream is precisely what you are protecting.
We install with shutoff and bypass valves so the house keeps running while a cartridge is changed, and we fit pressure gauges on both sides so you have real data instead of a guess. Changing a cartridge afterwards is a five-minute job you can do yourself, and we will show you how.
Worth knowing before you buy
If your water pressure has slowly dropped over months and you have a sediment filter, check the cartridge before you call anyone about your pressure. A clogged sediment filter is the single most common cause of “my pressure is bad” calls and it is usually a fifteen-dollar fix.
Every filtration system is a maintenance commitment, and the honest number matters more than the purchase price. Here is what this one asks of you. We track your intervals and remind you.
| Task | Interval |
|---|---|
| Spin-down screen | Flush monthly, or whenever you see the screen loaded |
| Cartridge filter | When you see a noticeable pressure drop |
| Pressure gauge reading | Glance at it monthly — it tells you everything |
| Housing O-ring | Lubricate or replace at each cartridge change |
We would rather you verified this than took our word for it. None of these are ours, none of them sell equipment, and all of them are free to read before you spend anything.

A great deal of Union's housing dates to the postwar decades, and many of those homes still run galvanised steel service lines that have been quietly corroding from the inside for sixty years. Every main break, hydrant flush and pressure swing dislodges some of that rust, which is why residents here notice brown water far more often than the water quality reports would suggest. New Jersey’s statewide lead service line replacement programme means a lot of streets in these towns are being dug up, and each of those shutdowns stirs the lines again. A generalist who installs a single five-micron cartridge in a house like this will be back in a fortnight. We serve every neighbourhood in Union Township and stage the filtration to the water we actually measure.
Why Top Filtration
The single most common mistake we are called out to correct is a homeowner — or a handyman — fitting one very fine cartridge because finer sounds better. It blinds fast, pressure drops through the house, and the cartridge gets changed monthly at real expense. The right approach stages it: a flushable spin-down screen for sand, then a coarser cartridge, then the fine one, so each stage protects the next. Big-box retailers do not scope this and general handymen typically cannot pull the permit when the work ties into your main line, which falls under the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code (N.J.A.C. 5:23) and requires a licensed plumber in most Union Township municipalities. We bring a licensed plumber in for that portion and handle the permit and inspection paperwork, in Battle Hill, Vauxhall and Union Center and everywhere else we serve.
Pricing, explained
Sediment filtration is the cheapest equipment we install and the easiest to get wrong. A spin-down screen is inexpensive and reusable. A single Big Blue housing is a modest job; a staged two or three-cartridge setup with pressure gauges costs more up front and almost always costs less over five years, because cartridges last far longer. Where the price really moves is main-line access — whether there is room to work, whether a bypass already exists, and whether your town wants a permit. We scope on site and quote in writing.
